"247" - The Last Two Days
The last two days ( Friday & Saturday) have been productive. With the guidance of Jack, and the help of Rick Wolanin on Friday, and Dick Babcock today, the side boards are cut out, planed to finish thickness, ready to be finished around the edges, and to be turned into a hull. The runner plank, and the spring board are both all laid up, epoxyed together, and are right now clamped up awaiting to be cut to shape, and finished.
"247" is going to be a boat!

"247" Clamped Up

Some folks go Camping, yesterday myself and Rick went clamping. We were fortunate to have Jack watching every move, and better yet, pointing for each step in the process. As most may have seen, we got the side boards edge glued (epoxy) and the back rest, 4 pieces of Okoume, painted with epoxy, formed and clamped into shape. I was lucky on that one, others have to first build the jig, in my case my helper - Jack just happened to have one in stock.
Tomorrow (Friday) I believe we will be running the side boards through the planer, and maybe cutting them to the shape of the hull, not sure, I will get the days production schedule when I get there. I don't know which is going to turn out to be the most fun, sailing "247" when she is on the ice, or watching raw lumber being turned into a exceptionally well designed and crafted "Need For Speed Machine" before my eyes, and most of it with my own two hands.
Stay with me

The home of Northern Michigan Iceboating and FUN!

Elk Lake Iceboat Party is March 6th and 7th 2010

...."it's the most fun I have ever had"
(Iceboat Larry)

Keeping the tradition alive as a 3rd generation iceboater..

Jack, individually, has gotten more than 60 brand new people across the country into iceboating (mostly skeeter class) in the last 4 years due solely to his enthusiasm and his willingness to share his knowledge and friendship. These are not people who already had boats, these are people some of whom had never even seen the sport in person.

Our ice checkers have decades of ice checking experience and most have decades of past and present racing experience. Click this link Michigan Ice Reports If you haven't already, you can register after clicking the link.
